Kinesio Taping

Matthew has been taped for almost a full week now. We had the tape changed on Friday and I am trying not to get too excited, but I think his foot looks good taped. He is still supinated a bit, but nothing like it does without the tape. Without the tape, it looks awful.

Matthew says his foot feels good taped too. He says it feels like his other foot. That can't be a bad thing, right?

And, when stretching him, I think he feels looser. But then again, I am just wishing for that and could be fooling myself.

Steve told me that by the time he is about 10 or 11 yrs old, he will be able to train himself to walk more on the inside of his foot and keep the position better himself. I said "oh good! Only three more years of taping his foot!" Steve just laughed at me.

We are getting a tape change today, then Wednesday (plus physio), then Friday. Then we are off to St. Louis Sunday and he sees Dr. Dobbs on Monday.

I am very curious now to see what Dr. Dobbs says about kinesio taping.

Isn't that tape amazing??!! Seriously -- when I could actually SEE Grace's foot MOVE when the tape was on, it was just so ... well, weird! But cool! :) And Grace wasn't even paying attention, so it wasn't as if she was "helping" it along at all (they had her lying on her belly, playing with a toy or puzzle, while they taped and manipulated. That foot had a life of it's own!)

I too am so curious what Dr. Dobbs is going to say. When I brought it up with VB he thought it was pretty cool but a little indifferent about the whole thing. Not in a bad, "I'm a snob" way at all -- just didn't rave about it as much I was. :) Please post -- I know you will! :)

We'll be praying for you this weekend -- hope the trip goes well, that Matthew (and you!) will be able to handle whatever comes your way, and that you'll hear some great news! :)

This is what I think Dobbs will say, "Well, if it's working I'm open to doing it. I trust the PT if you do as you know I find therpay beneficial for some kids." haha, at least that's what I guess he will say. He is very open to doing what works, even if it works for one kid and not another, which seems to be common with CF kids, muchless neuro CF stuff! :) Safe travels. Hope all goes well. You are prepared, even if it seems you don't want come home with a cast again and there is chance it may happen. I'm curious about the surgery options we discussed, if it will be a topic of discussion in STL, AND we have to compare NCT stuff to help educate eachother! :) Seems like a lot of typing mumbo jumbo, this may seem like a silly ?, but can I send a fax from US to Cananda, surely, huh? :) Jamie

I haven't had time to do much research, but I just briefly googled kinesiotape and clubfoot and saw there was an article by Dr. Herzenberg and it mentioned kinesiotape in the article but I couldn't access the full article. I've had some kinesiotaping down on my shoulder, kind of have on scapula that wings out, it is pretty cool how it felt. It was a bit more like Sue described, more little stips, etc. So I do beleive in it and would like to learn more about it. My husband uses sometimes in upper extremities, he was at Am. Society of hand therapists and there were several types of people marketing differnt kinds of tape. I think he got samples of one he likes. I'll have to talk more with him about it and get back to you. :) Jamie

Yes, Jamie's right -- the kinesio tape isn't meant to be used as "wrapper" so much ... rather, little strips here and there, working together, to target very specific muscles or areas. Did you watch the summer Olympics? That American beach volleyball player (Kerry something, I think) -- she had it all over her shoulder (like Jamie, I suppose!) and it looked like some bizarre map, with strips all over the place.

Grace's foot was just like that -- a long strip down the outside of her foot, then running up the outside of her leg (halfway up). That started the initial pull outward (which she needed), and the strip from the sole of her foot pulled it further outward. It even straightened up her MA for a time, which was just amazing (unfortunately it came back, though). There was no "solid" taping anywhere -- just very specific targets on her foot. It really was cool ... :)

If there are any photos available I could really use them. Dr Dobbs recommended taping and there are no therapists in the area who know how to do this.
